It wasn't until recently that I learned a profound lesson in education: the different types of learners are not limited to those who have to try hard and those who are naturally intelligent. I was not aware of Bain's deep logic on different types of learners. I aspire to be the most rewarding type of learner, a deep learner.

During my high school career, I was constantly a strategic learner, only putting the time into learning what was expected of me to learn, never what would help me receive the most out of the lesson. I found out exactly what my teacher wanted and did just that. As a result, I was able to maintain decent grades. However, after the material was tested on, I quickly let the information I had learned leave my memory, never to be heard of again. Also, my teachers taught in a strategic way. They would preface a lesson by differentiating what is important, or what was to be on the test, with what was extra, or what we didn't have to listen to.

Clearly this type of learning is not conducive to becoming a knowledgeable member of society. However, when every teacher presents the information this way and expects us to know the information for every test, and never forget whats important, its not always so simple to learn in a different way.

Connecting to Bain, we often value what society says we should learn over our own interests. As college freshmen, we transition from an environment based on reliance to the system, to one where we are the masters of our own destiny.

As a college freshman, I realize that you are the only person who controls your education. By being a deep learner, I will fully understand what I am learning in my classes and be able to apply them to other classes, as well. By using resources such as Evernote and Google Drive, I will save a record of any materials I have learned, which will make it easier for me to reflect on what I have learned and apply that to new knowledge. I will look forward to connecting existing knowledge to new information I am learning.

There will also be a greater emphasis on open discussion rather than testing. By having open discussions, I will be able to synthesize thoughts and opinions based on information I have stored. This is essential when deciding to become a deep thinker. The information is not enough. I will need to be able to use that information in a way that progresses my own as well as others learning.
